Brittney’s Story
Brittney Conway is the third Australian child to die as a result of ingesting a Button Battery in July 2020. Brittney was only three years old when she died while residing on Queensland’s Gold Coast. She was a beautiful cheeky little girl “with a thousand sparkles in her eyes”.
Brittney’s symptoms were originally thought to be caused by a virus. Brittney was rushed to the hospital nine days after becoming unwell, and a chest X-ray revealed a button battery lodged in her oesophagus. It had already burned through her oesophagus and into her aorta, resulting in catastrophic bleeding.
After a nine hour surgery, she was transferred to Brisbane’s Royal Children’s hospital where she underwent further surgery. Sadly, Brittney died eight days later from her injuries.
Her parents, Lorraine and David Conway have already started raising awareness about the dangers of button battery within the community, coordinating billboards to be displayed on the Gold Coast and in Bundaberg, Queensland. Their strength and determination to help save little lives and educate others is truly inspiring.
