Summers' Story

Summer Steers became Australia's first child to die after swallowing a button battery, in 2013. Summer was born and raised on Queensland's Sunshine Coast and was only four years old when she died. She was a happy-go-lucky girl who enjoyed the outdoors, the beach, and animals. Summer was a real tomboy and the light of her mother's the world.
Summer became sick about 18 days before she passed away. Doctors misdiagnosed Summer with Giardia and a nose bleed. After numerous doctor and hospital visits, an x-ray was finally performed, revealing a Button Battery lodged in her oesophagus. Summer was airlifted to Brisbane Royal Children's Hospital for surgery to extract the battery. Sadly, it was too late; Summer died in the operating room.
Andrea (Summer's mother) has been successfully advocating for button battery changes ever since.
